The Breadwinner

An animated narrative of a young girl living under the Taliban regime in Afghanistan

2017 | Running Time: 94 minutes | Rating: PG-13

Eleven-year-old Paravana must disguise herself as a boy to become the breadwinner of the family when her father is unfairly imprisoned for being an intellectual. A tale of self-empowerment and imagination in the face of oppression, Paravana’s story is brought to life through beautiful animation. It’s also a celebration of the undiscovered culture and beauty of Afghanistan. The film is an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Deborah Ellis first published in 2010, which has become recommended reading for middle-school students in the US, Canada and across Europe. THE BREADWINNER premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. Director: Nora Twomey; Featuring Voice Actors: Saara Chaudry, Laara Sadiq; Screenwriter: Anita Doron; Producers: Anthony Leo, Tomm Moore, Stephan Roelants, Andrew Rosen, Paul Young
