Lady Gaga’s Song for The Hunting Ground Empowers Sexual Assault Survivors

The singer and her co-writer Diane Warren speak about writing “Till It Happens to You” for the documentary about college campus rape

In a TimesTalk moderated by New York Times columnist Frank Bruni, Grammy award-winner Lady Gaga and acclaimed songwriter Diane Warren speak about the motivation behind composing “Til It Happens To You” — the theme song for THE HUNTING GROUND (2015), a film about the rape epidemic on college campuses. The conversation also included Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering, respectively the film’s director and producer.

Directed by Catherine Hardwicke, the song’s music video functioned as a PSA for the rape epidemic on college campuses.

The Sing for Survivors contest was a call for college a cappella groups to post video covers of “Till It Happens to You.” The After School Specials from the Claremont Colleges won the competition.

At the 2016 Oscars, Lady Gaga performed the song with a group of other sexual assault survivors.
