Of Fathers and Sons

A vivid and deeply disquieting tour of a jihadist military household

2017 | Running Time: 99 minutes | Rating: NR

OF FATHERS AND SONS provides rare insight into what it means to grow up with a father whose only dream is to establish an Islamic caliphate. The documentary centers on Osama and Ayman, the two sons of Abu Osama. From a young age, the boys are trained to follow in their father’s footsteps and become soldiers of God. The horrors of war and the intimacy of family life are never far from each other. At the nearby battlefront Abu Osama fights the enemy, while at home he cuddles with the boys and dreams of the caliphate. The film captures the moment when the boys have to let go of their youth and are finally turned into Jihadi fighters. OF FATHERS AND SONS premiered at the 2017 International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. Director/Co-Producer: Talal Derki; Producers: Ansgar Frerich, Eva Kemme, Tobias Siebert, Hans Robert Eisenhauer; Executive Producers: Dan Cogan, Jenny Raskin, Geralyn White Dreyfous

“’Of Fathers And Sons’ is a film riven with contrasts and contradictions; you can engage with the family on a human level but fear the single-minded hatred passed like a baton between generations.”
