From This Day Forward

A marriage survives a transgender partner’s transition, a daughter reflects

2016 | Running Time: 75 minutes | Rating: NR

FROM THIS DAY FORWARD is a moving portrayal of an American family coping with one of life’s most intimate transformations. When director Sharon Shattuck’s father came out as transgender and began living as Trisha, Sharon was in the awkward throes of middle school. Her father’s transition to female was difficult for her straight-identified mother, Marcia, to accept, but her parents stayed together. As the Shattucks reunite to plan Sharon’s wedding, she seeks a deeper understanding of how her parents’ marriage, and their family, survived intact. It’s a tale of commitment under exceptional circumstances spotlighting a Midwestern family who’s otherwise fairly typical. The film premiered at the 2015 DOC NYC Film Festival. Director/Producer/Co-Writer: Sharon Shattuck; Producer/Co-Writer: Martha Shane; Co Writer: Frederick Shanahan

“The complex family dynamics are fascinating, and they make for an engaging (if sometimes troubling) film.”
