Code

A look at why there are so few women in computer science

2015 | Running Time: 80 minutes | Rating: NR

In the United States, the tech sector outpaces the overall growth in employment but there’s a dearth of American women working as software engineers. CODE explores the reasons for this gender gap, interrogating the phenomenon of the “brogrammer” as well as the structural factors behind gendered and racial inequalities in computer science. The film also spotlights the history of women in the U.S. technology industries like Ada Lovelace whose stories have been marginalized from the popular narrative and women working today in the tech industry like Kimberly Bryan of Black Girls Code. CODE raises the important question: what would society gain from having more women and minorities code? The film premiered at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival. Director/Producer: Robin Hauser Reynolds; Producers: Staci Hartman, Christie Herring
