This film tells the extraordinary story of Alice Walker’s journey from her birth in a shack in Georgia to her recognition as a key writer of the 20th century. Walker made history as the first black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her groundbreaking novel, The Color Purple, since adapted into a Hollywood movie and Broadway musical. The film spans Walker’s involvement in the civil rights movement as well as the criticism she received through her career for personal and artistic choices, and includes interviews with Gloria Steinem, Danny Glover, Angela Davis, Sapphire and Steven Spielberg.
